High Definition TV Viewing Takes Home Entertainment to New Levels

Digital transmission has long been the standard procedure used in the transfer of images for television viewing. This method has been used for the past three decades or so, prior to which television signals had used the analogue transmission system.

Recently, the byword in home entertainment systems has progressed into high-definition viewing and HDTVs and entertainment consoles have flooded the market. The average consumer is always on the rush to get hold of one whenever innovative technology is introduced to the market.

So what’s the fuss with HDTVs really? All image transmission uses picture information which can result to varying levels of picture quality that depend on the type of broadcast format that is used. Developing technology focuses on improving picture quality to maximise picture information and attain the best end results. Digital transmission formats are far better off than the analogue type and results to clearer and more consistent picture quality. High definition transmission or HD on the other hand, is a step further in cutting edge digital technology that delivers picture and sound quality beyond anything ever imagined before.

High definition transmission signals contain up to 5 times the picture information of standard definition images. Standard definition typically uses around 500 to 600 lines of imaging pixels while high definition transmission uses at least 700 to more than a thousand, at the minimum. Television signals are made up of picture elements called pixels which collectively form the images seen by the human eye. The more pixels are used, the clearer and more detailed the image becomes since it contains more picture information.

High definition TVs commonly use two different picture resolutions. Flat LCDs or LEDs typically come in HD720 or HD1080 resolutions. The numbers represent the amount of horizontal picture lines used, and the higher they go, the sharper the images become. HDTVs also have all the necessary connections to interface with the newer gaming consoles, HD set-top boxes and DVD players. This is referred to as High Definition Media Interface or HDMI compliance, which is fast becoming a standard in the newer home entertainment systems set-up. High definition technology is not all hype after all. It has brought home entertainment to new levels and has allowed the average consumer to bring cinematic viewing experience right into their homes.
